Summary of Role: Summary
The renowned SunPower IBC solar cell is at the core of every SunPower solar module, and is the key to SPWR unchallenged performance, appearance and reliability in this market place. The advantages of the IBC cell design have only been realized in the market place through the installation of a unique toolset within our factories to enable high volumes and low manufacturing costs.
The role of the U.S. equipment design and deployment group is to design new equipment sets that are deployed into our manufacturing factories while achieving a complex array of targets: cost of ownership (COO), tool cost, facilities requirements, manufacturing efficiencies, process performance parameters, delivery timelines and several other stakeholder requirements. This task is performed by the equipment team in collaboration with various internal stakeholders and through strong partnerships with our equipment suppliers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Primary individual responsible for initiating, planning and managing development projects as needed to meet the equipment development roadmap.
  • Owns the following phases of tool design and development for tools currently used in production or for copy-exact tool platforms: tool-level design and design reviews; tool selection, definition, and purchase; tool-level fabrication, installation, testing and mechanical qualification.
  • Drives tool-level dFMEA and participates in 8D/RCCA. Expected to bring diverse experience to problem solving
  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
  • Defines goals directed to shorter term problem solving.
  • Participates in evaluation and implementation of equipment upgrades and modifications
  • Manages a relatively complex project and/or leads a small project team
  • Works on multiple problems of diverse scope. Very proactive - building solid database for future
  • Independent owner of project - Generates project schedule showing timelines, cycles of learning and task dependencies
  • Generates IP and invention disclosures at process step-level or tool-level
  • Recommends solutions that impact equipment COO/COC, availability or technical performance
  • Independently uses tools and methods applicable to the job function
  • Applies and follows company policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of difficult issues in both creative and practical ways
  • Interacts with senior-level internal and external personnel as necessary to meet goals
  • 20% international travel availability expected
Minimum Requirements: Education, Experience, and Qualifications
The ideal candidate would have the following qualities:
  • Minimum Bachelors of Science in Mechanical, Materials Science, Chemical, or related engineering area
    • BS + 5-7yrs experience
    • MS + >3yrs experience
    • PhD + 0-2yrs experience
  • In depth knowledge of aqueous metallization techniques and integration into microelectronic devices. Technologies involve electro- and electroless plating; secondary technologies involve batch wet processing and horizontal spray platforms for etch and clean processes.
  • Knowledgeable of comparable tools available from existing vendors with equipment expertise on multiple toolsets
  • Technically proficient in the following; equipment specification, equipment/process integration, equipment design principles, equipment material properties and limitations, industry safety standards, and common equipment failure modes.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Understands the impact of equipment function and performance on product/device quality and performance as well as the design vs. cost trade-offs at the tool level
  • Understands engineering economic calculations (i.e.NPV, ROI)
  • Deep understanding of engineering principles, concepts, and industry practices
  • Excellent engineering, problem solving skills, and project management proficiency
  • Good inter-personal skills to enable effective management of trade-offs between internal stakeholders
