Summary of Role: The Managing Director, Development for the Americas Utility and Commercial Group will be responsible for aggressively growing SunPower's leadership in the multi-mega watt PV power plant sector by leading teams in all phases of project development, including permitting, real estate and interconnection/transmission aspects of commercial- and utility-scale projects, building long term relationships, and supporting the closing of transactions.
This is a new position at SunPower. It will report to the Vice President of Sales for the Americas Utility and Commercial Group.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Managing SunPower's team of subject matter experts, with particular emphasis initially on successful completion of all open permitting, transmission and real estate matters on the Quinto and Henrietta Solar Projects.
  • Overall responsibility for utility and commercial project permitting processes
  • Overall responsibility for utility and commercial real estate due diligence, acquisition and management
  • Overall responsibility for utility and commercial project interconnection and transmission processes
  • Directing corporate permitting, real estate and transmission strategy
  • Oversight of outside permitting, transmission and real estate consultants
  • Working on an integrated basis with the Development, Sales, EPC, Legal and Finance teams to progress projects into construction and financing
  • Along with leaders of Commercial and Utility groups, evaluating, prioritizing and assigning work to subject matter experts and outside consultants
  • Presenting to management and Board on project development
  • Leading due diligence efforts for securing pipeline of development opportunities via acquisition.
  • Filtering and fatal flaw analysis of project opportunities
  • Supporting submittal of proposals to customers and partners
  • Representing SunPower at public hearings and government and community events related to solar projects.
  • Overseeing all Government compliance filings related to development projects
  • Staffing and performance management of the personnel on the development team reporting the Managing Director
  • Developing training and development goals for personnel on the development
Minimum Requirements:
  • 10+ years electric industry experience, preferably in renewable energy
  • 15+ years experience in energy project development, including permitting, real estate, and transmission, preferably in renewable energy
  • Network of consultants and other professional relationships to support SunPower in-house development efforts
  • 5+ years experience with commercial and utility solar project development
  • Strong track managing large interdisciplinary teams .
Preferred Requirements:
  • Tenacious problem solver - able to accurately assess, solve, implement, hand communicate solutions to problems
  • Proven ability to adapt to change in a calm and measured manner
  • Proven leader and manager with demonstrated execution experience and people management skills
  • Highly effective communicator -- able to craft and present excellent written presentations and analyze data to support arguments.
  • Skilled at creating, summarizing and presenting information logically, for executive decision-making
  • Passion for solar; conceptual understanding of solar in general & ability to see potential for solar in customer situation
  • Optimistic outlook / "can-do" attitude
  • Customer management & project management experience, knowledge, & training
  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Willingness to travel frequently, to SunPower offices and to SunPower project locations*LI-TJ
