Summary of Role: We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated person for the Modules R&D team. As part of the team, he/she will be responsible for design and integration of novel metallization concepts to interconnect cells . An engineer in this position will use previous metal bonding process design knowledge to work with vendor to modify existing tools or to design new interconnection tools that can support high-volume manufacturing of solar cells. This position will work closely with Cell and reliability teams in San Jose.
Minimum Requirements: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
  • Design and testing of interconnection bond and method to connect cell-cell
  • Demonstration and analysis of reliability and performance of interconnection scheme with regard to 25 years product warranty
  • Develop new test methodologies, processes to validate the device performance and reliability
  • Support deployment of new concepts, tools and processes in high volume manufacturing globally
  • Vendor selection and management for tool design of interconnection scheme
  • Investigate design and reliability failures, conduct failure analysis (FA) and provide reports
  • Interface with solar cell R&D to integrate interconnect design with cell process
  • This position is stationed in San Jose, California
Preferred Requirements: RELATED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum requirements
  • MS/PhD degree mechanical engineering, materials science, metallurgy, engineering physics, or related.
  • Strong background with minimum 5 years of direct experience in metal interconnection, bonding types, equipment platforms, and interconnection design tradeoffs.
  • Ability and proven experience to think creatively, learn, and develop innovative solutions to interconnect electro/mechanical challenges involved with photovoltaic panels in the field
  • Experience with fatigue testing, thermal cycling, stress/strain mapping required
  • Experience with metal alloys selection and design tradeoffs (corrosion, mechanical properties) required.
  • Experience with vendor management, establishment of joint development agreements, and project management a plus
  • Factory experience with materials handling, tool specification, start-up, and qualification of high volume manufacturing equipment a plus
  • Previous design experience with stringing tools (ribbons, wire-bonding) a plus
  • Familiarity with typical solar or semiconductor processes a plus
  • Familiarity with stringing and metal bonding technology is a plus
  • Proven field experience & problem solving skills and trouble shooting
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work both independently and with diverse teams
  • Strong communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Strong customer focused attitude

OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION
  • Must be willing and able to travel, both domestic and international, up to 25%
  • Limited relocation assistance will be provided for the right candidate
