The Surface Transportation Division of URS is actively seeking a creative, highly talented highway engineer for immediate employment in the Rocky Hill, Connecticut office. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in Highway Engineering, specific to Roadway alignment and design, drainage, grading, and utility relocation. URS is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects. The incumbent can look forward to projects including relocation of a State Highway adjacent to Sikorsky Airport in Stratford, Connecticut, the reconstruction of three active Metro North railroad bridges, Design/build bridge and highway projects throughout New England, and support of construction activities on the CTfastrak (Busway) and Q bridge projects.
• Reviews regulations and standards necessary to conduct technical studies and carry out project design and permitting work.
• Directs and conducts field data acquisition.
• Prepares designs, specifications and construction documents.
• Conducts site investigations and surveys.
• Applies engineering principles to develop effective solutions.
• Completes planning and evaluation studies.
• Calculates cost and determines feasibility of project based on analysis of collected data.
• Prepares or directs preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, transportation impact analysis, and designs for project.
• Addresses Request for Information (RFI) from contractors related to design issues.
• May oversee construction and maintenance activities at project site in support of construction management tasks and/or design-build projects.
• Verifies that applicable codes and engineering standards and practices are being met.
• Resolves issues or problems concerning conflicting design requirements, specifications and/or difficult coordination requirements.
• May conduct peer reviews and make technical presentations.
• Performs constructability reviews of designs.
• Has full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing and coordinating assignments and managing projects that are larger in scope and more complex.
• Plans, schedules, conducts or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work as a part of a major project or larger scope project.
• Plans and prepares, or reviews technical specifications according to the contract documents.
• Reviews and approves scopes, budgets and schedules for assignments.
• Tracks overall financial performance of task assignment. This will include coordinating with the Project Manager to monitor sold time and work backlog on task.
• Identifies potential clients and work.
• Secures and manages clients and contracts.
• Assists Business Line Managers in the development of new business, marketing to potential and existing clients.
• Provides advice and consultation to clients on engineering matters, including compliance with government laws and regulations.
• May be preparing marketing materials and making calls to potential new clients.
• Assigns tasks to and directs engineers, technicians and administrative staff.
• Delegates work to, trains, mentors and supervises less experienced staff to complete assignments.
