ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Conservation Easement Land Steward is responsible for monitoring conservation easements in portions of western Montana.  He/she will complete legal monitoring of conservation easements, develop monitoring reports and other Conservancy reports, and serve as the initial point of contact with conservation easement landowners to address ecological and compliance issues.  This position will work independently in the completion of easement monitoring, and will present a summary of management issues or needs to appropriate science and stewardship staff or alert them immediately if compliance issues exist.  Easement monitoring data will be collected using a GPS and camera to document legal compliance with easement terms.  Spatial data will be managed using ArcGIS and all data will be incorporated into compliance monitoring reports.  He/she will work extensively with easement landowners and will be expected to maintain positive relationships with them. The Conservation Easement Land Steward is supervised by the Director of Science and does not supervise any staff.

 

 
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience in natural resource management with knowledge of natural systems of Montana, invasive species ecology and management, and stewardship skills associated with land management activities or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience conducting legal compliance monitoring of conservation easements, including meeting and working with landowners, evaluating land use in the context of easement terms and baseline conditions, and completing annual easement monitoring forms.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in the use of ArcGIS, operation of a GPS, and camera. 
  • Experience communicating with the public both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc.
  • Experience performing physical work, using maps, and photo interpretation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience, including conducting conservation easement monitoring and analysis of legal compliance with easement terms. 
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems of Montana.  Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete land management assessments.
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities
  • Ability to communicate and work closely with landowners.
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers). 
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
