Job Summary

At Waste Management, the Gas Technician II position reports to the Gas Operations Manager and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of one or more landfill gas collection and control systems (GCCS). To perform this job successfully, you must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

A Gas Technician II is required to properly operate and maintain landfill gas (LFG) collection and control systems in a timely and cost effective manner in order to achieve optimum performance standards, perform daily preventative maintenance, and coordinate and oversee activities of contractors completing non-routine landfill gas collection and control system repairs.


You will be required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, monitoring device use, machine operation, etc) most of the work day, exert physical effort in handling objects less than 50 pounds on occasion, and wear personal protective equipment (safety glasses, hard hat, safety boots, safety vest, personal multi-gas monitor, etc.).


You should be familiar with routine blower / flare operations, condensate management system maintenance, environmental regulations affecting the operation and compliance of landfill gas management systems, and basic problem solving and troubleshooting of landfill gas collection and control systems.

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.


A. Education and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of landfill GCCS operating experience


    B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Must have a valid drivers license


    C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Satisfactory completion of WM LFG Technician Level II required competencies (applies to current WM employees only)


  • Basic computer skills (i.e., email, web browser, Excel, and Windows XP)


  • Strong mechanical and technical skills/aptitude


  • Ability to properly balance and maintain a GCCS


  • Ability to troubleshoot basic GCCS operational issues


  • Basic understanding of environmental regulations related to GCCS operations


  • Basic understanding of landfill gas instrumentation and wellfield tuning activities


  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older


  • Must be eligible to be legally employed in the US


  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.


  • Successfully pass pre-employment (post offer) drug screen, background check and motor vehicle records check


    Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Additional landfill gas related experience or education


  • Environmental monitoring experience or education


  • Industrial instrumentation related experience


  • Blower and/or flare maintenance experience


  • High density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe fusion certification


  • Opacity (smoke school) or visible stack emissions certification


  • Relevant industry or state certifications (e.g., SWANA, NSWMA, etc.)


  • Basic MS Word skills


  • Enhanced knowledge of landfill related environmental regulations


  • Good written and verbal communication skills


  • Basic electrical knowledge/skills


  • Ability to provide directional support to Level I Landfill Gas Technician(s)
