Job Ref:  38231
Employer:  Whole Foods.
City:  Austin
State/Province:  TX
Country:  United States
Type of Employment:  Full Time
Job Description:  Posting Background
This posting represents a revision of the original December 21, 2012 posting for this position.  On March 26 , 2013, an initial round of interviews for the position was held in Austin resulting in the decision to withdraw the posting in order to create a more explicit job description and first year work plan.  We also wanted to offer clearer guidelines for various potential Whole Cities Foundation activities, given the Whole Cities Foundation 501c3 non-profit status and corresponding potential activities in areas overlapping Whole Foods Markets core business.  The attached appendix prepared in part by Tricia Yost, Executive Coordinator of Tax Accounting, provides detailed examples of these guidelines.

Posting Preamble
Lack of access to fresh healthy food is a substantial and significant problem in the United States, with predictable and attendant health consequences for our citizens.  According to the Unites States Department of Agricultures Economic Research Service, there are 26 million Americans living in food deserts and a recent study by the same department suggests that there has been no meaningful change to access in these areas in the past 10 years (full report http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/err-economic-research-report/err143.aspx ).  In addition there are 30 million Americans living below the Federal poverty line, and food deserts disproportionately affect impoverished people and communities.  The situation in these communities is often exacerbated by their lack of transportation and income which also correlates to highest obesity rates.

There is also a widespread perception that healthy eating is more expensive and accessible only to some citizens.  This translates to a broader perception of elitism around Whole Foods Market and natural, organic and healthy foods in general.  We would like to see us challenge both of these perceptions in support of our mission to create a healthier world.

Foundation and Overview
Whole Foods Market is launching our 3rd non-profit foundation in 2013 called the Whole Cities Foundation.  The purpose of this foundation is to support and create broader access to fresh healthy food in underserved and inner city communities in order to create better health outcomes for both individuals and communities.  It is our intention that Whole Cities Foundation will support the larger context around food access in these communities first by understanding the work that local groups are already pursuing in this area and then amplifying or adding to these efforts " every community needs will be different but at the core Whole Cities Foundation will provide and support services such as but not limited to the following (in order to achieve the mission of the Foundation).

  • Nutrition / Eating Healthy
  • How to Shop on a Budget
  • Cooking Classes
  • Community Building and Partnerships
  • Transportation Assessment and Initiatives
  • Convening discussion groups and sponsoring conferences.
  • Education and Training in local food creation and production.
The new WCF Executive Director in conjunction with the WCF Board of Directors will develop a strategy and plan about where the foundation can be most effective, least duplicative and create a targeted focus in the key areas where it will concentrate the majority of its resources.  This will help differentiate the Whole Cities Foundation in how it is approaching and contributing to the mission of broader food access.
The Whole Cities Foundation can, and most likely will, work in all communities - both with and without a Whole Foods Market store. However it is likely to begin in both Detroit and New Orleans where we have stores in underserved communities.

Do " This work will increase access and offerings of healthy food.

Dont " WCF should not directly consult with individual farmers on how to improve profit/operations (because it is then for profit consulting), however, could connect farmers with others, including regional WFM operators.
WCF facilitates connections between community retailers and local farmers to sell their products.
Do " This work will increase access and offerings of healthy food.

Dont " WFM stores should not be included in the connections.  Also WCF could not provide grants or loans to farmers who are intending to make a profit, (that would be supporting a for profit entity), but could introduce the farmer to the LPLP.
