Water Resources Engineer – Extension Associate

Position Description:

The Water Resources Engineer (WRE) will work with Extension agents, specialists and students to develop and implement demonstration, education and research projects addressing water resource protection and applied stormwater issues. The WRE will be an active member of the Water Resources Program Team, designing and delivering in-service training on a variety of identified topics. The position will also support existing and planned environmental certification programs related to water resources. While the WRE will work with undergraduate and graduate students, this position is non tenure-track.

 

The position requires substantial travel and fieldwork throughout South Carolina.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical and design leadership for water quality demonstration and research projects located throughout South Carolina. These projects involve coordination among Extension Agents, local municipal and county governments, partnering organizations, private landowners, and Clemson University faculty and students. Projects will include demonstration and evaluation of innovative techniques for stormwater management, sediment control and other best management practices to address nonpoint source pollution (30%).

 

  • Work with Extension faculty to assist in continuing delivery of existing programs such as the Certified Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Inspector and Certified Stormwater Plan Reviewer program.  In addition, the WRE will assist in the design and implementation of new certification programs being developed through the Clemson University Center for Watershed Excellence (25%).

 

  • The WRE will be responsible for site assessments, engineering designs, construction supervision, field monitoring, data analysis, and reporting for 3 to 5 demonstration projects annually (25%).

 

  • Work with the Water Resources Program Team Leader to design and deliver innovative training of interest to Extension agents on multiple Program Teams, including Forestry and Natural Resources and Horticulture (10%)

 

  • Develop educational materials and participate in field tours, workshops, and other educational activities as identified (5%).

 

  • Work cooperatively amongst an energetic and professional team to create and deliver information and services focused on the protection of the state’s water resources, so as to achieve regional and national recognition for Clemson University, the Center for Watershed Excellence and Clemson Extension (5%).

 

 

Qualifications:

The WRE Extension Associate position requires a Masters degree in an engineering discipline plus a minimum of 2 years of environmental or stormwater engineering experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Demonstrated skills with teaching, surveying, CAD, construction supervision, and field monitoring are required. The Extension Associate must be able to work effectively with engineers, scientists, public officials, regulatory authorities, citizen groups, and construction contractors. Experience in extension programming, training, or related area is also preferred. Ability to work and make decisions independently is critical.
