Job Description:

Gray Is Green: The National Senior Conservation Corps
Green Grandparent’s Guide Internship

ABOUT US:
Gray Is Green: The National Senior Conservation Corps (NSCC) is the go-to organization for people over 65 who are interested in conserving our planet’s natural resources. The NSCC was founded by a group of retired Yale University professors. Their goal was to help other older Americans “green up” their lives and aid them in making their communities more sustainable. They quickly discovered that so-called "seniors" around the country are interested in conserving resources and leaving a natural legacy for their grandchildren. Now, with help from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Rockefeller Family Fund, our vision has expanded from greening retirement homes to engaging interested people over 65 in the fight against climate change.

Job Duties:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Green Grandparent’s Guide intern will be responsible for conceiving, developing and publishing educational materials for the Green Grandparent’s Guide, a self-directed resource for people over 55 to engage with younger generations in environmental action. Materials will include tutorials on fundamental concepts of environmental science and resource management, such as climate change, water resource management, and energy efficiency.

Interactive, creative, and craft-type projects that promote recycling, composting, and other forms of wise resource management will also be developed for distribution. Green Grandparent’s Guide modules will be primarily delivered via the web.

The intern may have opportunities to work and network with affiliated environmental programs and organizations, depending on availability.

Roles and Responsibilities:

QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will have undergraduate coursework in ecology, natural systems, environmental science, or environmental education, and experience developing educational programs for a variety of audiences. A motivated self-starter with the ability to work creatively and independently under deadline is important. Experience in graphic design, web development, and video editing a plus, but not required.

General Guidelines:

DATES AND COMPENSATION:
This is a full-time, temporary internship located in New Haven, CT. A living stipend of $200/week with housing or $300/week without housing will be provided. The duration of the internship is flexible, beginning in May and ending in August, 2010.

HOW TO APPLY:
Please submit cover letter, resume, and writing sample (if available). Describe in your cover letter how this internship fits with your careers goals and environmental interests. All applications should be submitted to internships@grayisgreen.org. Phone, fax, and mail applications will not be accepted.
