Manager, Safety and Restraints
The Manager of Safety and Restraints is responsible for selecting all Passive and Active Restraints Hardware based on specified total vehicle performance targets, Packaging and Studio Interface, System Development and Validation, Release, Test and Launch of the these systems for the Model S Sedan as well as other current and Future Tesla vehicle programs - including 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd row seatbelts and seat integrated restraints, driver and passenger front airbags, seat side airbags, side air curtain system, restraints control unit, sensors and the testing/integration of these commodities into the vehicle.
Also this position’s responsibility requires co-ordination of Tesla selected restraints suppliers and their components in terms of component design validation, integration and certification of these towards complete vehicle. Experience must include design release and vehicle safety certification.
This position reports to the Director of Body Engineering
Core Responsibilities
Manage the Safety and Restraints engineering team with superior technical skills and extensive knowledge of the latest hardware and techniques regarding restraint system implementation. Provide design, manufacturing and technical leadership aligned with program product profile, including: · Knowledge of the global safety systems regulations, consumer testing including in-house/due-care related items. · Develop active and passive restraints systems requirements for the complete vehicle. · Create world class system targets for function, cost and weight that support overall vehicle level safety targets. · Lead supplier selection and function as the primary technical interface with the selected suppliers. · Lead the development of specifications, DFMEAs, DVP&R’s and other technical documents · Establish system architecture and functional feasibility, working with key suppliers to develop active and passive restraint systems that meet/exceed all relevant targets. · Integrate and coordinate the restraint hardware into the total vehicle to maximize vehicle performance. · Manage the iterative process with the design studio to deliver the restraints system and meet all studio related objectives. · Optimize the designs with the appropriate analytical and physical assessments. · Complete and release of system, sub-system and detail designs, utilizing a mix of in-house design and supplier engineering. A mix of supplier and in-house designs are planned. · Insure that the designs can be manufactured, assembled and serviced. · Insure that the product conforms to all regulatory (e.g. FMVSS and ECE) requirements, as well as consumer testing (e.g. IIHS and NHTSA star ratings) vehicle level targets. · Manage component, sub-system, and system validation to insure that system targets are met and optimized. · Successfully launch the active and passive restraints system at the required quality levels and performance levels. · Meet program timing and financial targets. · Utilize Design for Six Sigma methodologies as appropriate during the design, development, validation and launch of the program. · Support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events. · Demonstrated ability for technical and safety protocol documentation, root-cause analysis, report writing and verbal skills. · Support safety components and vehicle release and safety certification for Tesla select global markets.
Skills and Qualifications
· BSME+ with a minimum of 10 years of experience in Active and Passive Restraint hardware specification, selection, packaging, development, launch and issues resolution, showing progression from designing parts through managing entire Active/Passive Restraint Systems from definition through to production – with flawless on-time delivery and superior vehicle performance. · In-depth technical expertise with the latest regulations (e.g. FMVSS and ECE), hardware developments for the updated FMVSS standards (pre-sensing, etc), Side Air Curtain Deployments and Strategies, restraints control unit development, IIHS standards and overall systems requirements · 4 years minimum experience managing in an automotive environment · Knowledge of CATIA V5 is a plus, along with the ability to understand and integrate CAE results into product designs; experience working with aluminum structures is a plus · Demonstrated ability to manage difficult projects with tight timing constraints
