Mechanical Engineer - Serviceability - Service Operations

Reports to: Director, Service & Parts Operations

We have a unique opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer - Serviceability within our Service Operations department. Successful candidates will have strong problem solving skills, and several years experience as a technical lead and a high level of personal accountability. This role will work closely with vehicle engineering, Service Team, Service Support Manager, diagnostics, troubleshooting serviceability challenges from a mechanical point of view.. This person must enjoy a challenge + find solutions; willing to work in the field when required and provide support in this emerging service field.

This individual will have experience in “design for service”. They are an advocate and liaison for service operations on the vehicle engineering team. They will focus on identifying potential service issues, serviceability, reduction of warranty costs and analysis. They will partner with quality to improve the overall design of all mechanical systems and bodies.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

Mechanical Design Engineer Designs and analyzes mechanical systems, equipment and packaging. Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. Directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design, design testing and prototype fabrication. Provides design information to drafting for packaging documentation. Focus is on design for serviceability of all mechanical applications, systems & component integration. Involves a heavy amount of design review and commentary w/in PLM and cross-functional meetings. This person is an advocate of service operations working in tandem with quality. His / Her focus is customer service, reduction in operational time, warranty cost and documentation.


LEVELING REQUIREMENTS:


Level 4:
• KNOWLEDGE: Having wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Some barriers to entry exist at this level (i.e., dept/peer review).
• JOB COMPLEXITY: Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Internal and external contacts often pertain to company plans and objectives.
• SUPERVISION: Determines methods and procedures on new assignments, and may provide guidance to other personnel.
• EXPERIENCE: Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience. In some companies, the requirement will be less. At this level, graduate coursework may be desirable.
• JOB COMPLEXITY: Works on issues that impact design/selling success or address future concepts, products or technologies. Often serves as consultant to management and external spokesperson for the organization.
• SUPERVISION: Exercises wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.
• EXPERIENCE: Typically requires a minimum of 5+ years of related experience. In some companies, the requirement will be less.
o Bachelors – Mechanical Engineering
o Masters degree is a bonus.
o Experience with CAD tooling, design and modification
o Experience from automotive industry preferred related to serviceability of vehicles.
o Proficient in 3D modeling/engineering drawings (Catia V5, Solidworkds, ProE, Inventor)
o Project/Program management experience.
o Prior automotive background a plus.
o Hands on mechanical and electrical skills.
o ERP systems database interaction capability (SAP/Oracle).
o Arena/SAP/Agile PLM (Product Life Management)
o MS Office skills.
o MS project planning.
o Written and verbal communication to all stakeholders.
o Six Sigma (Green or Black belt) or TQM.
o ISO / ASQ.
