ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Project Manager is responsible for day-to-day direction and management for a major project of the Nature Conservancy to conduct a landscape-level analysis for the South Gobi region. The project will help inform conservation, development, and mitigation strategies for the South Gobi, supporting a sustainable future for the region. The Project Manager ensures team direction and coordination, timely implementation of activities, monitoring of progress toward objectives and outputs, and produces regular progress reports. He/She is experienced and comfortable working in complex multi-stakeholder contexts, working collaboratively to advance project goals. The Project Manager reports to the Project Lead (TNC Conservation Director). He/She brings to the job sufficient knowledge and experience to carry out the following functions: • Successful experience in directing and managing projects. • Demonstrated supervisory experience, including the ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance. • Developing key relationships with public, private, and non-governmental organizations in order to identify and resolve issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results. • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs. • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and Mongolian languages. • Proven interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and facilitation skills. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS • BA/BS degree and 5 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Experience negotiating complex agreements. • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally. • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc. ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: • BA/BS degree and 5 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames. • Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number of sources and work independently. • Working with stakeholders, including business, government, NGOs, academics/scientists, media, and the public, to improve project outcomes. • Familiarity with general conservation practices and approaches. • Strong administrative skills including attention to detail. Ability to plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities. • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING: • Coordinates multiple tasks with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes. • Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances. • Compiles information, addresses challenges, and modifies processes to generate plans. • Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems. • Applies diversified knowledge and practices to a variety of assignments. • Ensures program accountability and legal compliance. DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING: • Ability to make sound decisions for TNC in the following areas (legal, financial, conservation, reputation). • Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment. • Performs tasks with minimal supervision. RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY: • Capable of gaining cooperation from outside parties to accomplish project goals. • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete tasks, negotiating and contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget development. • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements. • Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the project while controlling costs and administering budgets. COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: • Consistently demonstrate professional, positive, and approachable attitude/demeanor and discretion. • Communicates strategic project goals and objectives. • Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people. • Function productively as a member of a work team. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: • Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or strain. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
