Type of Employment:  Full Time
Job Description:
OFFICE LOCATION

ABOUT US

The Nature Conservancy is the world’s leading conservation organization, working in all 50 states and more than 33 countries. Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Founded in 1951, The Nature Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting lands and water for people and nature. Over the 60 years since our founding, we have grown to be the largest single conservation organization in the US and the world.  We seek a highly experienced fundraiser and program leader for the position of New Jersey Director of Philanthropy.

New Jersey has a rich natural heritage, and although it is the most densely populated state, its varied lands and waters shelter a great diversity of wildlife and provide an array of important benefits to people, such as drinking water, clean air and recreational opportunities. Historically, land protection has been the key strategy for the New Jersey Chapter, which owns and manages 33 nature preserves. Today, however, the Chapter uses an expanded suite of science-based, action-oriented strategies to help protect our forests, secure our freshwater, restore our oceans and coasts, conserve migratory species, and reduce the impacts of climate change

The position is based in Chester, NJ, and is critical to the success of the Conservancy in New Jersey, the metropolitan area, and around the world.

The Director of Philanthropy is charged with:
• Leading statewide philanthropy efforts, including the NJ-based philanthropy team, to raise in excess of $5 million annually in support of The Nature Conservancy’s statewide, regional and global conservation priorities.
• Serving on the New Jersey senior management team to help establish statewide conservation priorities and to ensure integration of the philanthropy program with these priorities.
• Working closely with the senior management team and the New Jersey Board Chair to strengthen and engage the state Board of Trustees to ensure it functions as one of the top charitable boards in New Jersey.
• Contributing to philanthropy Conservancy-wide (including raising resources to fulfill the Conservancy’s global mission as well as shaping the next phase of the Conservancy’s multi-billion dollar capital campaign) by working closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, metropolitan area directors of philanthropy, and philanthropy leadership organization-wide.

To achieve these objectives, the Director of Philanthropy oversees the planning and implementation of a comprehensive statewide philanthropy program aimed at securing significant financial resources from individuals, foundations and corporations within the State of New Jersey to support state, regional and global conservation goals. The Director works with New Jersey senior and philanthropy staff to develop a statewide philanthropy vision and multi-year fundraising goals, and provides the leadership to achieve these statewide goals. S/he encourages collaborative statewide philanthropy efforts, and communicates a broad vision, a focus on highest return activities and achieving long-range strategic priorities that advance the Conservancy’s mission.

The Director of Philanthropy has management responsibility for the 7-person New Jersey philanthropy team, which encompasses major and principal gifts functions, planned giving, donor prospecting and research, and multi-year fundraising campaigns.  S/he hires, manages, and establishes fundraising goals for New Jersey-based Associate Directors of Philanthropy to meet Conservancy fundraising goals for the State.  S/he also works with leadership and philanthropy staff in NY and CT on broader, metropolitan market-based approach as well as with the Conservancy's Chief Philanthropy Officer and senior philanthropy staff at the Worldwide Office and organization-wide to maximize major and principal gifts revenue.

The Director of Philanthropy plays a leadership role in motivating and coordinating the multi-disciplinary New Jersey staff and volunteer leaders in collaborative fundraising efforts, including major and principal gift donor strategy development, cultivation and solicitation. S/he is directly responsible for managing a select group of principal and major donor prospects.  The Director of Philanthropy understands and complies with all Conservancy gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.
