From droughts and wildfires in the west to heat waves and Superstorms like Sandy in the east, extreme weather fueled by global warming is happening now and it’s hitting us at home. 2016 is on track to be the hottest year on record, and in Pennsylvania, nearly 9 out of 10 people live in areas that were listed as federal disaster zones due to extreme weather between 2007 and 2013.
We know what we need to do: we need to get to net zero climate pollution by 2050 by stop burning fossil fuels and moving to 100% renewable energy.
The good news is that PennEnvironment and our national federation Environment America has been working to cut global warming pollution across sectors for decades and the progress we’ve made in the states has paved the way for major federal and international strides in the last several years.
Pennsylvania is at the center of this fight:
If we are going to be successful in fundamentally changing the way that we power our country, we are going to need every elected official who believes in the science of climate change and who wants to see us take it on, to be vocal in their support and call on other elected leaders to do the same. And we need them to make this stand as loudly as possible—to make it clear that supporting climate action is good policy and good politics.
We’re asking candidates to make a 2 year commitment to the campaign. The position begins in November.
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Philadelphia suburbs
There will be a week-long training near the beginning of the campaign. We will also hold periodic trainings on advanced skills for organizers.
The target annual compensation for this position is $25,500 in the first year. PennEnvironment offers a competitive benefits package. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.
We’re seeking applicants who are ready to commit their time, talent and passion to advocating, organizing and recruiting new leaders to protect the environment. We look for smarts, organizing experience and an eagerness to learn. We value leadership experience of all kinds, especially organizing, grassroots outreach and building campus groups.
