Over the last decade, the cost of college textbooks has soared. Since 2006, the cost of a college textbook increased by 73%- over four times the rate of inflation. Today, individual textbooks often cost over $200, sometimes as high as $400. For millions of students, that means choosing between food and books, working longer hours, or going without the course materials and struggling to succeed.
That’s why the Student Government Resource Center is hiring a campaign organizer to launch a nationwide network of student governments to advocate for accessible and affordable textbooks and course materials. This position will deepen and expand our campaign to expand the use of innovative solutions on campus like open-licensed textbooks, which are free online and free to download.
The campaign organizer doesn’t sit behind a desk. We need someone who is willing to work hard to advocate on behalf of students and help them advocate for themselves – whether it’s reaching out to student leaders from around the country, creating platforms and structures to support their advocacy, or working one-on-one to train those students as they develop plans to make change on their campuses.
Our two-year program emphasizes hands-on training and leadership development, giving staff the opportunity to make a tangible impact on critical issues while gaining real-world skills that will prepare you to be a future leader within PIRG. Some primary responsibilities include:
About the Organization: The Student Government Resource Center (SGRC) works to strengthen student governments and statewide student associations into more effective vehicles for student engagement and empowerment, by providing them with training and resources designed to help them build a culture of organizing and advocacy. SGRC was founded in 1984 by student body presidents from around the country who were working together on the first-ever National Student Campaign for Voter Registration. Since then, SGRC has worked with student leaders in every state to help them develop stronger organizations and win concrete victories for students.
Locations and start dates: This position is ideally based in DC, though other locations are possible. We accept applications on a rolling basis.
Salary & Benefits: The target annual compensation for this position is $25,500 in the first year. Staff in their second year receive a raise which averages $1500. SGRC offers a competitive benefits package. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.
