The Preserve Assistant Internship Mentor will serve as the liaison between Nature Conservancy staff and high school students participating in the program; and will help the students make the most out of their experiences. For the duration of the internship, the mentor is responsible for building a cohesive team, facilitating communication and managing disciplinary issues, and working with Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee County Parks staff on any issues when necessary.
This position is full-time for 9 weeks and is based 2 days a week in our Mukwonago office and three days a week with the Milwaukee County Parks Department.
The mentor will work along with six high school students assisting Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee County Parks staff in various site management projects (i.e. trail maintenance, habitat management, exotic species control, ecological monitoring, etc.) at chapter preserves and ecologically significant sites in the region. In addition, teams may be required to work in the chapter office and with other Nature Conservancy staff. The mentor serves as the go between with students and The Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee County Parks, explaining various tasks, motivating students and facilitating communication amongst the team. The mentor is expected to serve as a role model, taking an active part in work and activities that students and Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee County Parks staff perform. The mentor may be required to transport teams from homebase to the work site and back. The mentor may work with the team to plan various academic and professional development activities. The mentor is responsible for completing program evaluations, taking photos and videos and submitting all documents and files to the Outreach Coordinator prior to end of Season.
This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees will not drive Conservancyowned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered a "high risk driver." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which will include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record. This position also requires satisfactory completion of a criminal background check. Candidates offered positions will be provided with an electronic authorization form and employment will be contingent upon the results of a background check.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
• Attend orientation and training session prior to the June 19August 18 intern season dates. Orientation date will be determined based on Mentor's schedule.
• Act as the mentor and chaperone for a team of six high school interns. Strive to create a cohesive functioning team. Ensure compliance with Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee County Parks rules and regulations and work with Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee Parks Staff to resolve any issues that arise. Mentor must travel with interns.
• Assist stewards in various site management projects at the natural areas and preserves (trail maintenance, habitat management, biological and botanical monitoring, exotic species control, etc.) Motivate students to participate fully in all projects.
• Communicate with the stewards and assist in explaining the work to the interns. Proactively seek feedback from Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee Parks staff on student/team performance and concerns. Relate concerns of students and Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee Parks staff to one another. Facilitate weekly check-ins with students and midterm program evaluation process.
• Facilitate communication among team members and help resolve any problems that may arise between the interns or between interns and Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee Parks staff. Assist in conflict resolution and inform Nature Conservancy and Milwaukee Parks staff of any potential issues before they arise. Seek assistance in resolution when necessary. Participate in weekly check-ins with Nature Conservancy Outreach Coordinator and staff.
• Fill out necessary paperwork, including tracking expenses, to ensure proper administration and evaluation of the program.
• Mentors are expected to participate in post program surveys about their experience.
• Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
• Experience working with youth.
• Experience working with high school students. Teaching experience preferred.
• Experience working outofdoors, tolerance of long hours outofdoors and strenuous activities.
• Ability to work outofdoors, in all weather conditions and, at times, on difficult or hazardous terrain (e.g. steep slopes, wetlands, heavily forested or scrub land, etc.).
• Ability and willingness to drive long distances.
• Good team player with flexibility, strong communication and organizational skills, and a sense of humor.
• First aid training preferable.
• Spanish language skills.
