The Preserve Assistant performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and land management in the Mukwonago River Watershed and in Milwaukee County Parks. This is a shared high-school internship with our Nature Conservancy Mukwonago River Project office and the Milwaukee County Parks Department. The intern will be working with staff from The Nature Conservancy and the Parks Department, as well as local partners. This position is full-time (35 hours/week), temporary position open to area high school students heading into their Junior or Senior year, or Seniors graduating this spring. Employment dates are June 19, 2017 through August 18, 2017. Three internship positions are available and open to students who attended La Causa charter school in Milwaukee, WI.


The Preserve Assistant maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, removes exotic species and collects native seed. She/he maintains tools and equipment and opens and closes preserve to the visiting public. She/he will work with Nature Conservancy staff and Milwaukee County Parks staff to perform basic land management tasks. This internship will also provide basic job skills such as resume building, exploring conservation careers and interviewing techniques. There may also be educational opportunities to learn about bird and tree identification, species' inventories, bird banding, and other conservation topics and skills. This position will be based in our Mukwonago office 2 days per week and based in Milwaukee County 3 days per week. Transportation to and from the Nature Conservancy's Mukwonago River Watershed Project office and the Milwaukee Parks Department office will be provided. Interns will be led by TNC and Milwaukee County Parks staff as well as a full-time mentor who will assist with logistics and travel.

• Assist with outreach initiatives throughout and at the end of the internship.
• Participate in job training activities and educational opportunities.


• High school student entering their Junior or Senior year, or Seniors graduating this spring.
• Student who previously attended La Causa Charter School in Milwaukee, WI.
• Experience performing physical work.

• Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
• Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
