Americas Expatriate Tax Advisor

Bechtel has an open position for an America’s Expatriate Tax Advisor in our Glendale Tax Department, reporting directly to the Global Expatriate Tax Manager. As a member of Bechtel's expatriate tax team, you will work on a myriad of tax, human resource and payroll tax related issues involved with administering the global expatriate tax program for over 2,400 expatriate employees located in over 45 countries.  


Duties include but not limited to:

 

-        Responsible for the support of expatriate tax policy, planning and compliance requirements for the Americas region (North, South and Central Americas) while also assisting on a wide range of global tax functions.

 

-        Provide tax advisory services to the business units to achieve effective assignment structuring.

 

-        Research and prepare country specific-tax memorandums to outline assignee tax requirements.

 

-        Answer assignee inquiries related to tax policy, residency rules and taxation of compensation and benefits-in-kind.

 

-        Risk management assessment activities to ensure host country tax compliance tax minimization opportunities.  

 

-        Work closely with outside tax provider to administer and coordinate global tax program services.

 

-        Liaise with our regional expatriate and corporate tax team members in London and Brisbane on project start-ups and with on-going tax issues.

 

-        Hold biweekly tax briefing conference calls with new assignees.

 

-        Conduct group assignee tax presentations and conduct on-site project visits as needed.

 

-        Review and interpret income tax treaties and bi-lateral social security tax agreements to assess taxability requirements.  

 

-        Determination of tax requirements for international business travelers’ tax risk assessment.

 

-        Review of annual tax protection calculations.

 

-        Review of tax cost projections and communications to business units.     

 

-        Frequent work and association across functions (e.g., Global Mobility, International Payroll, Global Immigration).  

 

Required skills and experience:

-        5+ years of international assignment tax experience (Big 4 accounting firm experience preferred).

 

-        BS in Accounting or Finance

 

-        Accounting experience and professional certification (e.g., CPA) is preferred.

 

-        Bilingual in English and Spanish languages;

 

-        Strong knowledge of U.S. tax laws, practices and tax return experience with cross-border assignments.  

 

-        General understanding of other foreign tax regimes and ability to independently conduct research and interpret individual tax systems.

 

-        Familiarity with international assignment tax policy mechanics and computations, interpretation of such policies, and communication of interpretations to assignees and business units;

 

-        Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and SharePoint.

 

-        Limited travel may be required.
